Civic Beautification Project

Seasons in the Garden at Aquatic Park, Berkeley

Winter has arrived at Aquatic Park! But lack of rain has meant that the volunteers working with our Civic Beautification Project garden adjacent to the Children’s Playground have been working hard to keep the garden in good shape. We have had to water nearly every week to ensure that our plants, both established and new, get sufficient moisture. Many plants are still blooming – salvias, ceanothus, galvezia, etc. and we often see bees and hummingbirds, even at this time of the year. We plan to start pruning in the next couple of weeks.

In spite of the unseasonable weather conditions, the garden is thriving and all members are encouraged to pass by to take a look. Even better, join us on Fridays from 10-12 to see the garden and find out first-hand what it takes to keep it looking nice. We like to have visitors and always welcome volunteers even if you can only come sporadically.

The City of Berkeley has undertaken some badly needed repairs. The picnic table in the rear of the garden has been refurbished and returned to its place. Rotting and broken fence posts have been replaced by new ones. We are expecting a load of wood chips soon to be used for mulch.
