Presentation by Patricia St. John on the Chelsea Flower Show, Installation of Board and Berry Social
For those of us gardeners, on this side of the ‘pond’, the Chelsea Flower Show is the ultimate in flower shows. Held at the Royal Hospital Chelsea grounds, London, since 1912, it is the most famous flower and landscape garden show in the United Kingdom, and perhaps in the world. It attracts visitors from all continents with 157,000 in attendance annually each May. 30 designed gardens are on display, many with timely themes and often-times avant-garde, trend setting designs. In the central pavilion, growers take the opportunity to introduce new plant varieties, and display an astounding selection of various cultivars of Clematis, Dahlias, Heucheras, Peonies, Alliums, Lavenders, and many more. In addition to the 17 show gardens, 6 artisan gardens and 7 fresh gardens, designed by leading designers from many countries, the 11 acre grounds are also filled with artful displays of new garden products.
On June 20, we will be treated with a one-half hour journey through the 2016 show, featuring the award winning gardens and plant displays by Patricia St. John, following our installation of the 2017-18 Berkeley Garden Club Board. After the brief program, participants will enjoy a ‘berry’ social of early summer strawberries, blackberries and raspberries with shortcake and whipped cream.
